Baklava - A Sweet Tradition

Discover the rich history of baklava, how Mezeria elevates this classic dessert, and learn to make it at home with our recipe.

The History of Baklava

Baklava, a rich and flaky dessert made with layers of phyllo dough, nuts, and sweet syrup, is one of the most iconic desserts in the world. Its origins are widely debated, with influences from the Ottoman Empire, Greece, and the Middle East. Some historians trace its roots back to ancient Mesopotamia, where early versions of layered pastries were made.

The dessert as we know it today was perfected in the kitchens of the Ottoman Empire, particularly in the Topkapı Palace in Istanbul. Over time, baklava spread across the Mediterranean and beyond, becoming a beloved treat in countries like Turkey, Greece, Lebanon, and Armenia.

Traditionally served during celebrations and special occasions, baklava is a symbol of hospitality and indulgence. Its delicate layers and rich flavors make it a timeless favorite.

What Makes Mezeria's Baklava Unique?

At Mezeria, we take pride in crafting baklava that honors its traditional roots while adding our own unique touch. Here's what sets our baklava apart:

  • Handmade Phyllo Dough: Our baklava is made with ultra-thin, handmade phyllo dough for a delicate and flaky texture.
  • Premium Nuts: We use only the finest pistachios, walnuts, and almonds, sourced locally whenever possible, to ensure the highest quality.
  • Perfectly Balanced Syrup: Our syrup is made with a blend of honey and citrus, creating a sweetness that enhances the flavors without overpowering them.
  • Modern Twists: While we respect the classic recipe, we also offer innovative variations, such as chocolate baklava and baklava with a hint of rosewater.
  • Freshly Made Daily: Every tray of baklava is baked fresh daily, ensuring that each bite is as crisp and flavorful as possible.

Mezeria's Baklava Recipe

Want to try making Mezeria's signature baklava at home? Here's our recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 1 package phyllo dough (thawed if frozen)
  • 2 cups mixed nuts (pistachios, walnuts, or almonds), finely chopped
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Nut Mixture: In a bowl, combine the chopped nuts and cinnamon. Set aside.
  2. Layer the Phyllo Dough: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Brush a 9x13-inch baking dish with melted butter. Place one sheet of phyllo dough in the dish and brush with butter. Repeat this process for about 8 sheets.
  3. Add the Nut Layer: Spread a thin layer of the nut mixture over the phyllo. Add another 4-5 sheets of phyllo, brushing each with butter. Repeat the layering process until all the nuts and phyllo are used, finishing with a top layer of about 8 sheets of phyllo.
  4. Cut the Baklava: Using a sharp knife, cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes.
  5. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until the baklava is golden brown and crisp.
  6. Make the Syrup: While the baklava is baking, combine the sugar, honey, water, and lemon juice in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
  7. Add the Syrup: Once the baklava is out of the oven, immediately pour the hot syrup evenly over the top. Let it soak for at least 4 hours or overnight for the best flavor.
  8. Serve: Garnish with crushed nuts and serve at room temperature.
